Bulletproof Coffee Enhancers
My actual recipe, the real ingredients behind it, and the add ins that genuinely take it further, without the gimmicks.
- The real recipe is just 3 ingredients: black coffee, a fat source (butter or ghee), and MCT oil, blended until frothy.
- MCT oil has real research support for satiety and cognitive function, which is why this combination keeps me full and focused into the afternoon.
- Classic flavor add ins (cacao, cinnamon, vanilla, ginger) are about taste, the real functional upgrades are collagen, L-theanine, and lion's mane.
- I've removed a previous add in (Java Burn) from this guide, I'm no longer affiliated with it and no longer use it myself.
A personal journey
How I Got Into Bulletproof Coffee
Butter In My Coffee Seemed Strange, Until It Didn't
I remember the first time I heard about Bulletproof Coffee. The idea of adding grass fed butter and MCT oil to my morning brew seemed strange, especially since I'd always preferred my coffee black. After researching the benefits and trying it myself, I was sold. Dave Asprey, who created the recipe, discovered it while hiking in Tibet and being offered hot yak butter tea, he came home and started experimenting with butter in coffee, and it caught on from there.
My experience: I don't feel hungry until well into the afternoon, with heightened alertness and focus, which has been genuinely useful since I transitioned into full time writing.
The essentials
The Base Recipe
Just 3 ingredients, blended until frothy. Everything else is optional.
Coffee, Fat, and MCT Oil
What goes in
- 1 cup fresh brewed good quality black coffee
- 1 to 2 tablespoons grass fed unsalted butter or ghee
- 1 to 2 tablespoons MCT oil (start with 1 teaspoon and work up, MCT oil powder is gentler if you're new to it)
How to make it: combine all three in a blender and blend until the fats are fully emulsified and you get a nice foamy top. Enjoy immediately.

Why It Actually Works
MCT oil is metabolized differently than most fats, converting quickly to ketones the body can use for energy, and research supports real benefits here: MCTs increase satiety, which is exactly why I don't feel hungry until the afternoon, and studies show measurable improvements in cognitive function, including working memory with regular use. Adding a fat source like butter or ghee on an empty stomach also helps sustain energy and avoid the crash that can come with black coffee alone.

Make it your own
Classic Flavor Enhancers
These are about taste and variety more than a functional upgrade, but they're what I actually reach for.
Cacao, Cinnamon, Vanilla, and More
Add ins I rotate depending on my mood: cacao powder (1 teaspoon) for a mocha edge, Ceylon cinnamon (1/2 teaspoon), 1 to 3 egg yolks for extra richness and choline, Madagascar vanilla powder, organic ginger powder (1/2 teaspoon), and cacao butter wafers (1 to 2, less is more here, it's easy to overpower the cup).
The real upgrades
Level Up Additions
These aren't just flavor, each has real research behind the specific benefit.
Collagen Peptides
Unflavored collagen peptides dissolve completely without changing the taste of your coffee. Research supports real benefits for joint function and recovery, and separate trials show measurable improvements in skin elasticity with regular supplementation.

L-Theanine
This is the ingredient doing most of the legitimate work in products like Java Burn, which I've removed from this guide since I'm no longer affiliated with it or using it. L-theanine paired with caffeine has real randomized trial support for improved attention and reaction time, with smoother energy than caffeine alone. Adding it directly as a standalone powder is a simpler, single ingredient way to get the same effect.

Lion's Mane Mushroom Powder
Lion's mane has become popular in "mushroom coffee," and while much of the research is still developing, double blind placebo controlled trials in healthy adults have found measurable improvements in cognitive performance and mood, both acutely and with a few weeks of regular use. It's mild in flavor and blends in easily.

Putting it together
How To Make It
Brew your coffee
Start with 1 cup of fresh, good quality black coffee.
Add your fat and MCT oil
1 to 2 tablespoons each of butter or ghee and MCT oil, plus any flavor add ins.
Blend until frothy
Blend until fully emulsified with a foamy top, not just stirred.
Start slow with MCT oil
Begin with 1 teaspoon and work up, too much too quickly can cause digestive upset. MCT oil powder is gentler if you're just starting out.

Final Thoughts
I've been making bulletproof coffee for years, and the core recipe hasn't changed much because it doesn't need to, black coffee, a good fat source, and MCT oil is genuinely enough. The flavor add ins keep it interesting, but if you want an actual functional upgrade, collagen, L-theanine, and lion's mane are where I'd put my money now instead of a proprietary blend.
